When Everyone's Overwhelmed: 5 Ways to Reset With Your Kids

Simple ways to lower the stress and reconnect on hard parenting days

By Sharon Ramos September 4, 2026

1. Take a breath before you respond.

It sounds almost too simple, but even one intentional breath can create a tiny space between what your child does and how you respond. You don't have to solve the whole problem in that moment. Sometimes the first goal is simply not making it bigger.

2. Find the humor.

When appropriate, say something silly. Make a ridiculous face. Turn the instruction into a funny voice. Humor doesn't mean ignoring behavior that needs addressing, but it can break the tension enough for everyone to reconnect.

3. Put the hot topic on hold.

Not every disagreement has to be resolved right now. When you and your child are both upset, you can say, "We're getting frustrated. Let's come back to this later." Changing the subject or environment can give both of you time to settle before revisiting the problem.

4. Repair when things go wrong.

Sometimes you will snap. You might raise your voice or say something you wish you hadn't. That's when repair matters. Apologize for what was yours, reconnect, and try again. A reset doesn't require a perfect beginning.

5. Make a plan for next time.

Once everyone is calm, ask your kids: What made that moment so hard? What could we do differently next time?Take some time to reflect on your own to see what could be done differently. Maybe mornings need more preparation the night before. Maybe your child needs a snack after school before being asked to do something. Maybe you need a phrase you can use when you're reaching your limit. A difficult moment can become a learning experience for the next one.

A little reset can go a long way

School days can be stressful, but that doesn't mean there can't be plenty of fun days in there, too! When stress runs high, remember to pause, breathe, and reconnect. These five tips might not solve every problem, but they can help lower the simmer to a more manageable heat.

And remember: the goal isn't to never lose our patience. It's learning how to find our way back to each other when we do.

So the next time things start to boil over, try three simple words:

Pause. Reset. Reconnect.

Then keep going together.
